You may have heard the buzz about ChatGPT, an AI chatbot that was released in early December 2022. Its model is significantly better than previous AI tools, and its output is surprisingly clever and even thoughtful.
Of course, we thought to ask it about dogs.

How ChatGPT Works
We’re not going to go into the details of how the AI works (that’s above our pay grade!) but if you want to try it out yourself, you can go to OpenAI’s website. From there, sign up for an account and ask it questions, provide open-ended prompts, and so on.
There are certain questions it can’t or won’t answer, ranging from innocuous stuff like “what do you think about…” (because it doesn’t “think”) to more serious stuff like illegal activities.
ChatGPT on “If Dogs Could Talk”
We’ve all wished that we could communicate better with our dogs, so they know just how much we love them. But what would they tell us, if they could talk?

We also asked it to write a poem about the bond between humans and dogs:

ChatGPT’s Favorite Dog Breeds
We’ve written about breeds of dogs well-suited to families and new dog owners before, as well as the most popular breeds. We don’t have a favorite breed of dog (only a favorite dog: the one we have now). But we thought we’d ask ChatGPT anyway:

We also asked what name ChatGPT would pick, as we’ve written a LOT about names, including a dog name generator, and naming ideas themed around food, coffee, candy, Hebrew names, Swedish names, witchy names, the list goes on and on…

ChatGPT’s Dog Jokes
You know we had to ask about dog jokes! These are actually pretty good:

Hey ChatGPT, Can You Translate This For Us?
We’ve also written about dog body language before. We could ask about tail or ear posture, but we thought it’d be funnier to ask for a translation. Unfortunately it wasn’t as funny as we’d hoped:

ChatGPT Writes a Limerick
One of the fun things about ChatGPT is that it understands different writing styles. Here’s a limerick about chasing squirrels:

We Asked ChatGPT to Write a Dog Food Advertisement… for Dogs
In the few days since ChatGPT rolled out, they’ve changed their interface. You used to be able to specify that you wanted an advertisement, as part of a drop-down menu with presets.
But you can still ask for advertisements. Here’s one meant to be read by dogs:

You can see that it didn’t keep the audience in mind the whole time, switching partway through to talk to the owner about their dog, rather than talking to the dog directly. Still, it’s pretty good.
ChatGPT’s Puppy TV Show Idea
Last but not least we asked for a TV show that would be watched by dogs. So heartwarming!
